Oued Zem Diamond Boucherouite

This rug was handwoven by artisans inOued Zem.

Oued Zem is nestled in theMiddle Atlas Mountains just north of the village of Beni Mellal, the capital of the nearby region.

This weaving style is calledBoucherouite.

Boucherouite(pronounced boo-shay-reet) rugs were not originally intended to be sold as they were mostly used by theAmazigh in their own homes, as modest carpets. Some called them ‘rag rugs’ as they are made of various recycled pre-used clothing or textile scraps.

The design motifs most used in this rug have been passed down through generations representing strength and protection in the Amazigh culture. The diamondsare thought to symbolize anflower (Ouarida in Amazigh) which represents a symbol of protection against the evil eye.
