This beautiful collective of women artisansreside just outside of Tazenakht. Fatima, pictured, isone of the senior members ofthe collective.

This style is called Hanbel. It’s woven with sheep’s wool from the local market. The colorsare created with natural ingredients like henna, pomegranate, saffron, indigo, alfalfa and mint.

While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.

Every design elementcomes entirely from the artisan’s imagination – thesymbols within this rugdepict protection from evil, strength, beauty and respect just to name a few.
