Oued Zem Colorful Protective Boucherouite

This rug was handwoven by artisans inOued Zem.

Oued Zem is nestled in theMiddle Atlas Mountains just north of the village ofBeni Mellal, the capital of the nearby region.
This weaving style is calledBoucherouite.

Boucherouite(pronounced boo-shay-reet) rugs were not originally intended to be sold as they were mostly used by theAmazigh in their own homes, as modest carpets. Some called them ‘rag rugs’ as they are made of various recycled pre-used clothing or textile scraps.

The design motifs most used in this rug have been passed down through generations representing strength and protection in the Amazigh culture.

Please note, due to the vintage nature of this piece there are varying piles. For example, the middleLion’s Paw motif is Flat while the surrounding checkerboard design is a low pile.–technical details
